There are approximately 17,500 companies in the United States, employiing over 80 million people. About 6,000 of those companies trade on the various U.S. stock exchanges. The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index, known simply as the S&P 500, is a market-capitalization-weighted index of 505 of the largest,  large-cap U.S. stocks. Why 505 not, 500 stocks?   We’ll explore that question and more as we shed light on an index that went down nearly 20% in 2022, and which ten stocks did the most damage.
