Bear markets, defined as a period where the stock market goes down 20% or more from its highest point to its subsequent lowest point–happen frequently—probably more frequently than you think. From 1900 – until the present, there have been 32 bear markets. Statistically, they occur about 1 out of every 3.5 years and last an average of 367 days according to Dow statistics. Bull markets tend to last much longer.
